Prices of Yesteryear

Some prices of yesteryear (1897):

Rent for a 6-room house in Port-of-Spain: $ 30.00 per month

Hotel Room (Queen’s Park Hotel, Ice House Hotel etc.): $ 2 to $ 3 per day

Islandhopping from St. Thomas all the way to Demerara and the Orinoco, living on board a steamer: $ 150.00 or $ 2.50 per day

Carriage hire in Port-of-Spain: $ 5.00 - very expensive!

A cook’s wage: $ 6.00 to $ 8.00

Cab hire: 4 shillings up to one hour, every subsequent quarter of an hour: 9 pence, sixpence for every additional person, four pence extra for luggage.

Return fare to United States or Canada: $ 100.00

To Europe: $ 175.00

Pony: $ 100.00
